Mixed picture going into Labor Day weekend

A kayak tour of the entire pond this morning, after several cool, unsettled days and some rain reveals a mixed picture.

Cyanobacteria (green dots floating up from the botttom of the pond) are again visible mostly on the north and west sides of the pond. On the south side of the pond, past the center, and near town landing the water is almost completely free of visible cyanobacteria, but use caution. To avoid dermatalogical reactions, avoid lingering in areas with more than a few dots. Don’t let pets ingest pond water while these conditions persist!

Due to the harvests, everything looks cleaner and fresher than in past years, which is nice, but some algal mats remain in the southeast cove, to the left of town landing, and across the pond near the western shore. The mats can have a locally toxic effect, so stay clear.

Visibility remains good, and the fish, herons and egrets provide abundant grace.
