Monday morning report, clear waters on the northern side!
These are Peter’s morning hydrotherapy swim observations: Zero “green dots” thiis morning at 9AM out to about 250 feet from the northern shore. Near the center of the pond I did note a slight specking of dots. The water has remained crystal clear, as documented in James and Andrew’s testing measurements (see data) yesterday.
Friday Jerri did not see any of the blue-green cyanobacteria dots by kayak anywhere in the pond, late in the day, but returning in bright daylight on Saturday, she found a moderate amount of dots throughout the open water.
We are now making consistent observations that the remaining cyanobacteria are mostly present in the mid-day with the sun overhead. James’ interpretation is mixing of upper and lower water during cool and warm periods.
Possibly, according to Dr. Wagner, we should credit 3.5 billion years of evolution and respect the sophistication of this ancient form of life, older than us by far, and even older than plants. These cyanobacteria invented photosyntesis. They produce oxygen and have inflatable vessicles that allow them to float themselves up and down. What we may be seeing is that the green dots are surfacing for light mid-day, and trying to dip below for phosphorus refreshments at night.
As for toxicity, according to Dr. Wagner, while there might be rash reactions, serious harm would come from significant ingestion of pond water. Pets should still be kept away.
