Life doesn't get better than this...
Peter’s observes: “I swam out beyond the center of the pond from noon to 1pm. I did not see a single green floater. Clarity since early July’s harvest has been sustained and continues to increase, almost like a magnifying glass.”
The absence of blue green dots in the middle of the day is especially telling. Any cyanobacteria from the bottom of the pond have used up their reserves of phosphorus and can no longer sustain themselves in the clear water.
We can reasonably expect these excellent recreational conditions until the “fall turnover”, toward the end of September or early October. The lily pads, now in regrowth, should continue to siphon out excess nutrients from surface waters, keeping them exceptionally clear.
We can visually track schools of fish as can the osprey, eagle, and heron looking for their next meal. Please enjoy your pond, and thank you, Shelter Island! Life does not get better than this.
