Getting better, but use caution...
Our first two official measurements on Fresh Pond’s clarity this spring were less than 1 meter. We always look for two meters of clear water at the top of the pond, without any bright green dots or streaks. You should see your toes in the pond!
Clarity has since improved! Over the last 4 days since our last test sampling, the greenness from the Spring “turnover” has begun to fade and clarity has increase despite the heat.
We have seen some clumping algae of concern, localized in a few spots, in the South East lily pad cove to the left as you enter from the Fresh Pond access road, on the south near Turkem’s Rest, and near the preserved land on the western edge of the pond. Please stay away from areas with large green clumps.
A giant snapping turtle was observed by one resident yesterday. These incredible creatures efficiently scavange the pond, keeping it free of dead fish. They are no threat to people unless harassed, so show them the respect they deserve. Many are older than any of us…
On July 3rd, Dr. Ken Wagner of Water Resource Services, the biologist on our engineering team will survey the pond, including these areas, in preparation for our harvest and mechanical cleanup. We are optimistic that this will once again greatly improve clarity and water qualtiy and prevent localized issues from becoming widespread.
