Getting to the bottom of Fresh Pond

Members of the Long Island Dive Club & Association voyage to the bottom of the pond, sampling water at various depth, and recording the depth of deep sediment (at least 8 feet) at the deepest point. Other divers scouted the perimeter looking for artifacts and helping with clean up.

They could not have asked for a finer day or better conditions.

The pond bottom is cold and completely lightless. In search of wrecks and buried treasure, the diver’s flash lights provided minimal range in the bottom. In Spring our intrepid divers, led by Shelter Island’s David Hoffman and Glen Whelpley, will repeat the initial exploratation, bringing bigger lights and finders.
