It’s not easy being green…
With the usual spring cold-to-warm “turnover”, excess nutrients collecting at the pond bottom feed back into the upper waters. Early spring clarity has given way to a greenish cast with fliamentous algae — not necessarily a harmful bloom (HAB) — visiblly forming around fallen treee branches and in stagnant areas. Be cautious!
We currently have less than a meter of clarity, but as the season continues and the layers of the pond separate, we can look forward to improved visibility. We hope this summer’s harvest/cleanup will once again restore the pond’s pristine clarity and improve the quality of water contributing to our creeks and bays.
Update 6/19: low clarity (less than one meter) and a brownish/green tint to the water persists. Lily pads are up and beginning to flower, getting themselves ready for another harvest (and regrowth) in July that led to such a remarkable increase in clarity last year. We’ll keep you posted on testing this weekend (6/22) and the date for the “muck to mulch” harvest festival!
